Farmer God
04:08
|
|||
if farmer god is out there, he’s got long grass ‘tween his teeth
a pair of biblic overalls and nothin’ underneath
and he stands with a pair of hands in pockets long and deep
digging for the keys to the tractor that he keeps
in a shed out past the pasture
where the cows, all milky, wait
for the chance to wander through his pearly-handled gates
and he drives with a vengeance to which no one can relate
churning rock and plant and beast
and all he did create
or did he now?
he sped the plow
but he spared the rod
spoiled children
farmer god
mrs. god is canning bitter and forbidden fruit
she poses on the label in her goddamn birthday suit
and she leans on the beams of a doorway miles wide
tracing clouds of tractor smoke that scream across the sky
spelling ‘why?’
if farmer god is out there, he’s got long grass ‘tween his teeth
an attitude the size of all who cower underneath
and loving hands of mercy twisting necks of chickens meek
and lay me down to sleep
and pray my soul to keep

Big Green Cloud

straw was the color
of her hair from up here
twist in her finger
into gold in her ear
damn well near perfect
was the view that was mine
much better over here
i've heard than on nine
(come back down)
i can see everything in this big green cloud
(come back down)
i can see everything in this big green cloud
hand holding hers
drawing circles in the sand
shell letters spelling something
i don't understand
lawn is the color
of the air way up here
lay back in faith
holding glass broken clear

Last Time Home

taken one day at a time
it doesn't look like much
but it's what he calls his life
he's got something up his sleeve
might be the next big thing
but it looks just like his arm
mother strikes a wooden match
lights a stolen cigarette
lets her ash grow fat and long
there's a cat outside that screams
with the bird still in its mouth
but she never seems alarmed
and i'm floating in and out of you
floating in and out of view
grandpa slumps upon the bench
his mouth is open catching flies
he's got a bag of bread and seed
and as they grovel at his feet
he laughs at something we can't see
the cat has drawn a bead

Watershed
04:07
|
|||
one jack over
keep the change the channel
got a dollar here that says the end is near
black out slowly, fade to velvet
under you, the rolling ground of lost and found
my church rages on and on about it
feet of crows and clay
i can’t pray without it
not one moment to spare for an epiphany
i still rush to wait
the rain out in the dark
but i grow old
waiting for the watershed
but she don’t mind
she runs my hand underneath the water
says “give it just a little bit of time”
belly back down
reaching for another
one of these days, true nirvana’s gonna knock me up
step outside
decision made to smoke away
a banner year, but i’m still here
and now out standing
an open field of memory
a safety net of true regret
duck back in
order up and over out
i steal home to wait
the rain out in the dark

Rule of Thumb San Francisco, California
A now-defunct San Francisco quartet that bridged the alt-roots and indie-rock worlds through memorable melodies, literate
lyrics, and non-traditional song structures.
Over the course of four albums, Rule of Thumb created what listen.com called "Multi-faceted, near-flawless gems of catchy, yet uncompromising pop. Rule of Thumb's music is smart, beautifully produced, and scintillates with wit."
