yours were the stars i followed this is the sky i see yours were the trees i hid behind this mountain, you and me deep was the sea i swam in dark was the night above now i’m drowning in an empty ocean what happened to the love that was drawn behind the curtain on the canvas, on the easel there it’s a still life of a stillbirth of a love pretending not to care and am i still in love am i prepared to understand that your masterpiece was just the portrait of a shadow of a man yours were the words i swallowed with a kiss that choked the heart yours was the path i followed it ended where i’d hoped to start now mine is a well of sorrow i drop my dreams in from above but i never hear them hitting bottom what happened to the love _______________________________________

oh my god. eureka! i have found it after years of stumbling around it i have fallen on it now this must be the promised land so damn close so many times before now flew in low but never hit the shore how could i miss the giant letters that were written in the sand maybe all it takes is growing up a little growing up enough to see above the shit’ll make me feel like a brand new baby in a thirty year skin spent some time up upon the mountain high and low and over by the fountain it’s a little hard to swallow the bit about eternal youth when i came down down into the valley a voice said ‘thou shall not ever dally get off your ass, son go out and find the fucking truth’ now i’m not talkin’ about god or some religion i’ve done my time with all the other pigeons just looking for a handout too lazy to cluck around now i swear the lazy days are over i have turned the four leaves of the clover i can leap tall buildings with a single bound _______________________________________

Alice 03:04
alice saw the other side of things the other night through the pane of window glass she stared into the light a hairline crack inside her hear began its slow divide alice touched the window saw a welcome place to hide stand back from the window draw the shade and dim the light someday sleep will come and take you deep into the night stand back from the window if the darkness is too bright comes a time that will not be denied on the other side alice down the hole again and shrinking to the wall mad about the hatter in her head she hears the call a cheshire smile upon her face a grin from ear to ear seeing something close at hand but far away from here _______________________________________

knock knock, look who's here a little bit of history why i ever left now is just a mystery to me but i won't stay long i'll just take a look around i know the baby's sleeping so i won't make a sound time and time again i settle on a snapshot taken in the haze of a morning very grey she is in your arms you both are fast asleep there's two hearts for the taking but one who couldn't keep but i never thought that you could untie the knot i had tied around the cradle of your heart and part of me was hoping that another part would open in me telling me that love is not the hardest part low wind blow, sad and slow years of tiny steps could never walk you home knock knock, look who's here another bit of history why i ever left now is just a mystery to me but i won't stay long that comes as no surprise i don't know what your mother told you but i see it in your eyes _______________________________________

every night i go to sleep i'm dreaming of elissa what was hers is mine to keep when i'm dreaming of elissa whispered fingers pressed against her lips drinking in her smile with gentle sips i am taken by the slightest of her slips i don't remember the first time that i saw her i don't remember much of anything these days some say the weather might be turning finer she would have wanted it that way from the café across the street i was dreaming of elissa i took my fate in hand to meet the dream that was elissa and as her whisper trailed off with the light what never will be echoed in the night i am shaken just the slightest bit tonight _______________________________________

i can see her standing there she's digging at the ground, ground, ground she's pulling up a fist of sand and throwing it around and 'round over by the fence a boy is standing with his collar turned the whisper of the bitter wind and this is all he's ever learned hold on callie hold on callie through the night the wind comes screaming you know it'll be alright hold on callie hold on callie through the night the rain comes streaming through the crack in the moon tonight twenty years beyond the sandbox she has learned to mind the bell until she turns the corner and she stares deep down into the well pulling up a bucket full of sodden leaves and memories the dirt beneath her fingernails the mud that colors all she sees follow me down to the hollow of my mind follow me down to the sea oh callie _______________________________________

now it's fall and all the leaves have turned away from me and they've fallen into someone's waiting arms but not in mine all the words that i couldn't say seasons pass and then they pass away you never get the chance to say goodbye when he went to sleep he was breathing standing high above the canyon father, son, hand in hand you know your son burns brightly now with a solar mind is it hard to set a spirit free free, so strong that he cannot see the love he needs from home as he flies alone when he went to sleep he was breathing _______________________________________

about

rule of thumb's debut album was a cassette-only release when it arrived in late 1993. produced by david bryson (counting crows), the album featured the first lineup of ROT and was recorded at bryson's dancing dog studio in emeryville.

a video was shot for the song "alice" and the band got some college radio airplay with the album, including a live interview/performance on KSCU.

about

Rule of Thumb San Francisco, California

A now-defunct San Francisco quartet that bridged the alt-roots and indie-rock worlds through memorable melodies, literate lyrics, and non-traditional song structures.

Over the course of four albums, Rule of Thumb created what listen.com called "Multi-faceted, near-flawless gems of catchy, yet uncompromising pop. Rule of Thumb's music is smart, beautifully produced, and scintillates with wit."
